Highlights of the 2018 Oscars

The 90th Oscar Awards were held on March 4, 2018. It took place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater and aired on ABC. Like many awards shows, this year’s Oscars ceremony had some political moments, but there were heartwarming moments, notable quotes, and historic nominations and presentations that made this year’s ceremony is one we will not soon forget.

Quotes

-“We can’t let bad behavior slide anymore.” Jimmy Kimmel, on the sexual assaults that have plagued Hollywood

-“To all the dreamers out there, we stand with you.” Kumail Nanijani

-“Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.” Lee Unkrich
-“Whatever form your dream may take, it’s through passion and perseverance that the impossible is possible.” Glen Keane

-”We are close to 50/50 for gender representation.” Kristen Anderson-Lopez, on the nominations in the category of Best Original Song. She looks forward to this spreading across all categories.

-”I am an immigrant, like many of you. But the greatest thing our art does and that our industry does is to erase the lines in the sand. We should continue doing that when the world tells us to make them deeper.” Guillermo del Toro

Moments

-Rachel Shenton signing her acceptance speech: Shenton won the Oscar for the Best Live Action Short Film for “The Silent Child,” which is about a deaf child. She signed her entire acceptance speech!

-Andra Day and Common perform on stage and highlight activists making a difference.

-Trailblazers video: This video points out how the movies this year made an impact on society. Representation is important, and thanks to many films this year, so many people now have the opportunity to see themselves on screen.

-A video was played of film clips from movies that honor those who have served in the military around the world.

-Keale Settle performed the Oscar-nominated “This Is Me,” from The Greatest Showman, while celebrating diversity.

-Lin Manuel-Miranda wore an orange pin in honor of those who are killed or wounded every day by gun violence.

Nominations and Presentations of Worth:

-Yance Ford: first transgender filmmaker to be nominated for an Oscar

-Dee Rees: first black woman to be nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars

-Daniela Vega: first openly transgender performer to present at the Oscars

-Wes Studi: first Native American to officially present at the Oscars

-Rachel Morrison: first woman to be nominated for Best Cinematography at the Oscars

-40 women have been nominated for Oscars this year, which is a record.
