14 Tastiest Dishes to Order with Food Delivery

By Kailey Walters on July 18, 2020

With the world around us in constant flux, especially with conflicting news on how often or even if we should be going out again, sometimes it’s reassuring to know that we can rely on certain things to stay the same or at least stay consistent for the time being. Take food delivery, for example. Even if restaurants aren’t open for dine-in, we can still directly order food to go or use food delivery services to get food right to our front doors.

If you’re not particularly fond of cooking meals for yourself, food delivery is definitely a big plus. You may be wondering what the best dishes to order might be — after all, by the time the food arrives at your doorstep, it may not be quite as fresh as it was a half-hour ago. Read on for a few ideas of what to order next time you’re hungry or don’t feel like preparing something yourself.

1. Grilled meats and vegetables

If you’re concerned about your food becoming soggy, dry, or less flavorful after it’s been delivered to you, ease your worries by ordering some grilled meats and vegetables off the menu of your chosen restaurant. As grilled food (think steak, chicken, lamb, and vegetables) can sit out for a long time without losing its texture or flavor, it’s the best way to go to make sure your food is still fresh and delicious by the time it arrives at your door.

2. Hot sandwiches

While you may be tempted to order a deli sandwich with cold cuts, the better bet is actually to order a hot sandwich instead. A cold sandwich could easily get soggy with all of the tomatoes, pickles, and lettuce inside, which may not make for a very pleasant experience when you finally get it. (And let’s face it: you could probably make yourself a decent cold sandwich at home anyway.) But a hot sandwich — as in, one that is made to be heated up and probably contains different ingredients — may prove to taste much better. Even if it gets to room temperature by the time it arrives at your door, you can easily fix that problem by popping it in the oven at 350 degrees to make the bread nice and crispy on the outside.

3. Pizza

You didn’t think we would leave pizza off this list, did you? It’s classic, it’s convenient, it’s affordable, and it tastes great. If you have a favorite pizza place that you usually order from, go for it. The kind of pizza you order may also depend on what you like or what you’re in the mood for. Either way, whether you go with a classic cheese or pepperoni pie, or something more adventurous like a Hawaiian pie, it’s likely to be a win. And one of the best things about pizza is that it makes for great leftovers. Some people enjoy eating cold pizza the next day for breakfast. If you’re not one of those people, you can still heat up your leftover slices in a pan on the stove, and it’ll be just as good as it was originally.

4. Thai salad

If you’re looking to spice things up and go a different route than the typical Caesar salad, you might want to try out a Thai salad from your favorite Thai restaurant. Some great options include som tum, a papaya salad with dried shrimp, chilis, fish sauce, peanuts, and sugar, which all marinate in the ingredients’ juices to enhance flavor, as well as larb, which contains minced meats, fresh herbs, lime, chile, and dry roasted rice. Both of these fresh salads do well with delivery, as they’ll arrive at your door just as fresh and delicious as they are meant to be. What’s more, these Thai salads are a really fun, creative, and healthy way to cater to your summer palate.

5. Burrito bowl

You may be craving an actual burrito, but there’s a possibility that it could fall apart while in transit or that all the different ingredients could get squished together and not taste like much of anything once it arrives at your home. Instead, a burrito bowl may be a better option because it’s less likely that all the ingredients will mush together and create a mess. In fact, you can ask to have certain things on the side in separate containers — such as sauces or guacamole — so that you can add as much or as little as you want. That way, everything will still be intact and you can enjoy your burrito bowl the way you like it.

6. Noodle dishes

Noodle dishes are usually a very reliable option for when you order delivery — depending on the type of noodle dish and as long as they are packaged properly, of course. Dry noodle dishes, such as pad Thai, will likely be fine while being transported to your home. Noodle dishes that come with soup should be packaged so that the soup and noodles are separate, in order to avoid making the noodles soggy (and to avoid potential spills while in transit). In addition, any extra sauces and dressings should be packed on the side — which can again avoid sogginess and the potential for spills while also giving you the chance to use as much sauce on your noodles as you would like.

7. Sweet brunch food

If you happen to be in the mood for breakfast or brunch but can’t go out, getting brunch delivered to your doorstep is the next best thing. (And in most cases, it’s probably better than trying to whip something up yourself.) However, you’ll want to steer clear of ordering eggs for delivery, as they usually don’t hold up well in transit. Instead, you can get something sweet, like pancakes, waffles, or French toast, which will probably taste just as good as when they are fresh. Besides, these sorts of breakfast items are usually difficult to perfect on your own at home, so you might as well order something from a place that serves breakfast or brunch and enjoy it. This brunch treat can be even more fun if you have people to share it with — so if you’ve been living with roommates, have brunch together over the weekend and enjoy yourselves at home.

8. Poke bowls

Poke bowls, which are a Hawaiian specialty with rice, diced raw fish, fresh vegetables, and a variety of sauces, are pretty popular; in fact, a survey from Grubhub revealed that poke bowls are the fastest-growing delivery order nationwide. This is most likely because poke bowls are served cold, so you don’t have to worry about your food going from hot to room temperature; the way in which the ingredients are layered on top of each other prevents the food from getting squished together; and, if they are stored in insulated bags while being transported, they should turn out completely fine by the time they get to your home.

9. Sushi

In a similar vein, sushi is a good option for food delivery. Like poke bowls, sushi is made up of rice and raw fish, and it’s served cold, so there are minimal risks involved. What’s more, there is quite a variety of sushi you can order, so you can do as you please. It’s even better if you are eating with a group of people (such as your roommates, if you happen to be stuck with them), so you can all order different kinds of sushi and share with each other.

10. Insomnia Cookies

If you ever find yourself craving something sweet at night (or really any time of the day), Insomnia Cookies is a fantastic option to turn to. They deliver very late at night and even into the wee hours of the morning, so you’ll be able to get your fix whenever you want. It’s best to order a box of half a dozen or a dozen cookies (or even more if you prefer!) and share it with a group of people, so this will work out well if you’ve been living with several roommates and can share it with all of them. There are a lot of different flavors to choose from, so don’t hesitate to order a little bit of everything!

11. Chinese food

You can’t go wrong with ordering Chinese food — after all, it’s a pretty classic thing to get for delivery. This 2016 survey by The Eater shows that Asian food was the top delivery choice in 13 states with Chinese food making up 42% of that, which just goes to show you how popular Chinese food is. With many Chinese restaurants offering a variety of dishes — from fried rice to various noodle dishes to egg rolls — you can’t really go wrong with what you order. Also, you’ll often get a lot of food for a relatively cheap price, which is great because you’ll most likely have some leftovers that can last you for your next few meals. And of course, the white Chinese food takeout cartons are reliable vessels for transporting your food, whether it’s rice, noodles, or anything in between.

12. Barbecue

Barbecued food is another great option when it comes to ordering for delivery because it handles the delivery time well. Whether you’ve ordered pork ribs or brisket, it’s most likely still going to taste great when it gets to you, as it doesn’t need to stay crispy and doesn’t have to be presented in any particularly fancy way.

13. Tacos

If you’re like me and sometimes get random taco cravings, it’s pretty reassuring to know that you can order some whenever you want. Depending on the type of tacos you get — whether it’s hard or soft shell, and based on what’s inside — they should hold up pretty well during transit and arrive at your place still tasting delicious. Going with simple options such as beef, grilled shrimp, or grilled chicken tacos can also help keep your food tasting fresh. What’s more, these are relatively healthier options than other things on the menu of any given Mexican restaurant, such as nachos or chimichangas.

14. Fried chicken

Surprisingly, fried chicken is a pretty popular — and of course, very tasty — option that will probably satisfy your cravings even when it’s being delivered to you. Fried chicken comes in many forms — chicken wings, chicken legs, and chicken tenders or strips, among other kinds. Most Americans don’t want to say no to fried chicken when they are in the mood for it. So if you’re really craving fried chicken and know just the place to order from, then go for it.

With so many different food delivery apps out there, including Uber Eats, Grubhub, Seamless, Door Dash, and Yelp (just to name a few), all the food you could ever want to order is completely accessible to you with just a few taps on your phone. Of course, you don’t want to have food delivered to you all the time, as it’s less expensive and healthier to buy your own food from the grocery store and cook it yourself. However, during the rare occasions when you’re feeling a little lazy, when you just want a little pick-me-up, or when you are craving a particular food, go ahead and order food delivery.
